Biometrics Appointments for ILR 2026 — UKVCAS Guide & Booking Tips

What is biometric enrolment and why is it required?

Before the Home Office can process your ILR application, you must provide your fingerprints and a digital photograph. This process — called biometric enrolment — is carried out at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) centre. Your biometric data is then linked to your application on the Home Office system.

Your ILR application is not formally submitted to the Home Office for processing until after your biometrics appointment. This means any delays in getting a slot directly delay when your processing clock starts.

How to book a UKVCAS biometrics appointment

After submitting your online ILR application form and paying the fee, you will receive a reference number. Use this to book your biometrics appointment on the UKVCAS website. The booking process:

  1. Log into the UKVCAS portal with your application reference
  2. Select a service point near you (there are core and enhanced locations across the UK)
  3. Choose an appointment date and time — book as early as possible
  4. Upload your supporting documents to the UKVCAS portal before your appointment (not all documents need to be physical)
  5. Attend your appointment with your passport and application reference

UKVCAS service types — core vs enhanced

UKVCAS operates two tiers of service:

  • Core service: Free to use. Available at main UKVCAS locations. Standard appointment times during working hours. No document scanning service included — you must upload documents yourself via the portal before attending.
  • Enhanced service: Available at additional locations including some premium locations. Fees apply for enhanced services (e.g. out-of-hours appointments, additional document checking). Useful if core slots are unavailable in your area or you need flexibility.

The eVisa transition — what has changed for 2026

In 2026, the Home Office has fully transitioned from physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) to a digital eVisa system. This means:

  • When your ILR is granted, you no longer receive a physical BRP card — your status is recorded digitally in your UKVI online account
  • You share your status via a digital share code rather than showing a physical card
  • Ensure your UKVI account is linked to your current passport — if you renew your passport after ILR is granted, update your eVisa record immediately
  • Your biometric enrolment data from previous applications is generally retained — you may not need to re-enrol fingerprints if they were captured relatively recently

What to bring to your biometrics appointment

  • Valid passport (and all previous passports if available)
  • Application reference number (from your UKVI online application)
  • UKVCAS booking confirmation
  • Any physical documents that could not be uploaded to the portal in advance

How long does the appointment take?

A standard biometrics appointment takes approximately 20–30 minutes. The enrolment officer will verify your identity, scan your fingerprints (all 10 fingers), and take a digital photograph. You will be asked to confirm your personal details match your application. The process is straightforward — there is no interview or assessment at this stage.

What if you cannot attend your appointment?

If you cannot attend, cancel or reschedule via the UKVCAS portal as early as possible. Last-minute cancellations or no-shows may affect your ability to rebook quickly. Do not simply fail to attend — this could invalidate your application or delay processing significantly.

Appointment availability and waiting times

UKVCAS slot availability varies by location and time of year. London tends to have higher demand and shorter availability windows. If slots near you are limited:

  • Check multiple UKVCAS locations — it may be worth travelling to a less busy centre for an earlier slot
  • Check availability at different times of day — early morning and late afternoon slots are often released later
  • Refresh the booking portal regularly — cancelled slots are released back into availability
  • Consider the enhanced service if core slots are unavailable and you have time pressure

Planning your application around biometrics

Given that processing does not begin until after your biometrics appointment, plan your application timeline carefully. If you are applying close to your current visa expiry date, securing a biometrics slot quickly is important. Applying within the 28-day early application window gives you the maximum possible buffer. Once you have submitted and attended biometrics, Section 3C leave protects your status while the Home Office processes your application.
